No retainer · ACMA CGMA · Quarterly (four returns a year)

Once your taxable turnover passes £90,000 you must register for VAT and file returns digitally under Making Tax Digital. Software alone leaves you to classify every transaction and spot reverse-charge items. I do the quarter: collect the transactions from Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent or your spreadsheet, classify standard, reduced, zero-rated and exempt items, reconcile the VAT account to the books, prepare the return and submit it with your sign-off. You get the figures and the payment date by email.

Questions people ask

Do you handle Flat Rate Scheme returns?

Yes, at the same £99 a quarter. Flat Rate returns apply your sector percentage to gross turnover. I also tell you if the standard scheme would cost you less, which is common once input VAT on purchases is significant.

What about the Annual Accounting Scheme?

If you are on annual accounting you file one return a year with interim payments. I quote that as a fixed annual fee in writing before starting, and tell you if quarterly standard returns would suit you better.

Should I register for VAT before I reach £90,000?

Sometimes. If your customers are VAT-registered businesses, voluntary registration lets you reclaim input VAT on purchases. If you sell to consumers, registration usually means adding 20% to your prices or absorbing it. The threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months. How is the return submitted?

Under Making Tax Digital the return goes to HMRC through MTD-compatible software (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent, or bridging software from a spreadsheet). I prepare and reconcile it, you approve the figures by email, and it is submitted through your software, or by me as your agent once that authorisation is in place.

What about the construction industry reverse charge?

The VAT domestic reverse charge has applied to most construction services between VAT-registered businesses since March 2021. I classify those items correctly each quarter. If you are a subcontractor with CIS deductions, those belong in payroll and Corporation Tax, not VAT, and I keep the two in step.
