What exactly is "bookkeeping cleanup"?
Bookkeeping cleanup is the process of bringing a mess of unposted transactions, unreconciled bank accounts, and uncategorised entries into a clean, year-end-ready state. It typically involves: reconciling bank feeds, categorising transactions correctly, posting sales invoices and supplier bills, fixing duplicate or mis-categorised entries, reconciling the VAT account against submitted returns, restructuring the chart of accounts if it's a mess, and producing a handoff pack your accountant can use for statutory accounts. It is NOT statutory audit, year-end accounts preparation, or tax filing — though our cleanup makes all three much faster and cheaper.
Will my existing accountant get annoyed?
No — most accountants welcome a properly-cleaned set of books because it dramatically reduces their year-end workload (and they can quote you less for statutory accounts). We work to your accountant's preferred chart-of-accounts structure, deliver a handoff pack, and coordinate directly with them if you authorise us. Many of our cleanups come via accountant referrals because we save them time.
Can I just give you my Xero login?
Yes. Xero, QuickBooks, and Sage all support "advisor" / "accountant" access — you invite us as a user with the right permissions, we do the work, you can revoke access at any time. We don't store your login credentials — we use the platform's native access controls. We register as your bookkeeping agent with HMRC if you need MTD VAT or ITSA filing support.
What if my mess is bigger than 1,000 transactions?
That's typically the Forensic Cleanse tier. Multi-year reconstruction, several thousand transactions, director's loan account untangling, HMRC enquiry support — these are scoped at a free 30-minute discovery call and quoted as a fixed-price project. Most multi-year cleanups land at £2,495–£5,995 depending on complexity.
Do you handle the actual VAT return submission?
We can — as your authorised HMRC agent for VAT, we submit the reconciled MTD VAT return. The cleanup tier includes the VAT-period reconciliation but not the submission itself (£99 per quarter for the submission service). For sole traders, we also handle MTD ITSA quarterly updates (£495 annual service).
What if HMRC has already opened an enquiry?
This is the Forensic Cleanse tier. We rebuild the underlying records (where possible — for VAT enquiries we go back to bank statements, sales invoices, supplier bills), produce defensible working papers, and prepare your response with your accountant or tax adviser. We are not solicitors — for HMRC enquiries that escalate to tax tribunal, you need a specialist tax solicitor. We coordinate.
Are you a chartered accountant?
Yes — ACMA CGMA (Associate Chartered Management Accountant, CIMA). This is a different chartered designation from ACA (ICAEW) or ACCA, but it is a full chartered qualification with continuing professional development. We are not Registered Auditors — for statutory audit you need an ICAEW-registered audit partner, which we coordinate when required.
How quickly can you start?
Most UK cleanups start the same week. Free 30-minute scoping call (today or tomorrow), written quote within 24 hours, 50% deposit, work begins next working day. Catch-up delivered in 5 working days, full-year in 10. Forensic agreed at scoping.
